Who we are
Afro-Caribbean Kidney Awareness (AACKA) is a community-led initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the rising rates of kidney disease within African and Afro-Caribbean communities. Our mission is to shine a light on the disproportionate impact of kidney-related illnesses, promote early detection, encourage preventative lifestyles, and advocate for improved access to care and education.
With kidney health becoming a concern—particularly due to low public awareness—AACKA is here to inform, empower, and support those most at risk. Through culturally sensitive outreach, educational campaigns, partnerships, and events, we aim to bring kidney health to the forefront of community conversation and action.
What is Kidney Disease?
Kidney disease refers to a condition where the kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood as well as they should. Your kidneys play a vital role in removing waste and excess fluid from the body, balancing minerals, and helping control blood pressure.
When the kidneys are not working properly, waste and fluids build up in the body, which can lead to serious health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, nerve damage, and even kidney failure.
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
Sudden and temporary loss of kidney function, often caused by illness or certain medications.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
A long-term condition that develops over time and can eventually lead to kidney failure if not managed.
Common causes include:
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Genetic conditions
(like polycystic kidney disease)Frequent use of certain medications
Poor diet and lack of physical activity
