NEAT: The Simple Way to Keep Moving and Stay Healthy
When most people think about exercise, they imagine going to the gym, running, or doing a workout class. But what if there was another way to improve your health without needing a gym membership, fancy equipment, or extra time set aside in your busy day?
That’s where NEAT comes in.
NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis—the energy we burn through all the movements we do outside of formal exercise. This includes everyday actions like:
- Walking to the shop
- Taking the stairs instead of the lift
- Gardening
- Playing with children
- Doing household chores
- Even standing instead of sitting for long periods
It may not feel like much, but these movements add up. In fact, NEAT can play a huge role in maintaining a healthy weight, improving circulation, and reducing the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease.
Why is NEAT important?
For many in the African and Afro-Caribbean communities, health risks such as high blood pressure and diabetes are more common, which in turn can increase the chances of kidney disease. While structured exercise is great, not everyone can commit to regular gym sessions. NEAT offers a practical and accessible way to keep our bodies moving every single day.
How to increase NEAT in your daily life:
- Walk or cycle for short trips instead of driving
- Use stairs instead of escalators or lifts
- Take standing breaks during work or TV time
- Carry shopping bags in multiple trips for an added workout
- Add extra steps by parking a little further away from your destination
Small steps, big impact
The beauty of NEAT is that it doesn’t require big changes—just consistent, mindful choices to move more throughout the day. Over time, these small movements strengthen your body, protect your kidneys, and improve your overall wellbeing.
At AACKA (African & Afro-Caribbean Kidney Awareness), we encourage our community to embrace NEAT as part of a healthier lifestyle. Remember: movement should feel natural, enjoyable, and sustainable—not a chore.
So next time you’re about to take the lift or stay seated for hours, think NEAT. Your kidneys—and your whole body—will thank you.
